When you run and develop a website, you are not surprised that sometimes we have to quote another website other than your website, the term SEO is called external link.

For example: when referring to Google Adword ads, I have to link to https://adwords.google.com/ is a completely normal thing.

However, there are times when the link that we lead to is not really credible. On the contrary, it also adversely affects the reputation of your website. That gave Google a new concept of LINK as No-follow and Do-follow.

In the example above, I feel that adwords.google.com is a very reputable website and I don’t need to make any changes. If you want to quote an article such as “online betting website”. Now you will feel very worried if someone thinks you are advertising the other website. Worse, Google may think that you are deliberately leading users to that site.

To avoid this, webmasters often choose to add the rel=”nofollow” attribute in the <a> tag link. Basically it will look like this:

The opposite of no-follow is do-follow. The link if left unrelated or to rel=”dofollow” to notify the bots of the search engine is “I’m pretty sure about this link and the user can click on it”.

No-follow is an attribute added to limit the spam content of SEO-er such as blatant comment links to the blog posts though not relevant.

The no-follow attribute adds extra authority to webmasters, which helps them limit the vast majority of unconscious SEO-er.

And the value of the link with the no-follow attribute also dropped significantly, only about 1/100 value of a do-follow link (but a no-follow link is still essential in SEO).

As you know, one of the criteria affecting search results, making your website more reputable in the eyes of Google is the number of quality backlinks flowing to your website.

How To Identify No-follow & Do-follow Links?

When reading an article in which the author cites links to other websites, how do readers know where to follow or no-follow?

For people who know a little bit of HTML, they can press F12 and see the <a> tag. If the tag has the attribute rel=”nofollow” then it’s the no-follow link and vice versa. If the tag doesn’t have that attribute or it’s rel=”dofollow” then the link cited is the do-follow link.

But as mentioned above not everyone can read the code and that is quite time-consuming for you. Currently, there are browser utilities that help you see them right in the article and that do not waste more time finding and checking links.

For example:

  • Firefox has the “NoDoFollow” add-on.
  • And Chrome has “Nofollow” and “Mona Nofollow” extensions.

Here are the utilities that help highlight links with no-follow attributes. That helps us identify completely and without wasting time.

Which One Is Better?

This is certainly a question many people wonder. In theory, the do-follow link helps webmasters inform Google that “Yes! This is a good link, I recommend it to you, Index it”. And the page you link to gets points in the big ranking algorithm of Google and your page is also sweet.

And the link with the no-follow attribute means “Hey! I am not sure about this link and it is not responsible if the website is not good!” So Google only evaluates the other site and increases its traffic, not the points it gives.

But what if your website is completely do-follow? It is not natural, right.

And this is also very dangerous if your website is a forum and the member posting on it is an SEO-er for a football betting website or a sex web.

It’s like saying that the betting site is reputable and the sex website is full of good content. So in a do-follow and no-follow website links are always preferred by Google but it will prefer the do-follow attribute and be less interested in the no-follow attribute.
